Easier to write on your desires than speak on your reality.

The hip-hop industry is one of the fastest growing industries in South Africa, and as it grows, more young artists are springing up. As the genre progresses, more and more talented individuals and groups are trying to break onto the market. For some ,however, the market value of their art is not the basis of their music.

This is the case for Tshiamo 'Homie Teez' Moloke.

Teez grew up in what he refers to as the Soweto of Pretoria- Ga rankuwa. Rapping in both English and Vernac, mixed with elements of Tsotsitaal (a combination of slang, vernac and Afrikaans), Teez refers to his sound as alternative. Music to Teez, is what writing is to me. That is a place of refuge and a diary where he speaks on his experiences. Tshiamo explained that a song called Movement, which features on his mixtape Constance, is one of the tracks where he really put his life onto a record. Constance is an auditory narrative in which he communicates his life story.

According to the rapper, his music represents a life that he does not want to live.Moloke explains that he didn't start making music because he liked it. After growing up in a position which forced him to become comfortable with being uncomfortable, music was the one thing that allowed Teez to be in a space where he didn't feel alone. Music became his companion in that sense. "My music is raw, everything I rap about is real-life experiences", says Teez.

Since no person lives the same truth as another person, simply being honest and sharing his life experiences in his music, brings a unique element into Teez's music. Rapping about his life isn't always easy according to Moloke , "it's easier to write about your desires than speak on your reality", however by rapping about this reality it allows him to deal not only with his past but to also shed light on his future.

The young rapper has already had his track Anele Mdoda feature on Yfm and has recently released his second mixtape The Cut. Teez is also in the running to perform at Oh My Jam later this year.

I can definitely say that I thoroughly enjoy his flow and lyrics. I also hope to see him progress in the music industry and continue to contribute to the African creative market.

Love and Light!
